Hit Points

Usually abbreviated as 'HP', hit points are a measure of how much damage a creature can take before going down. Once you reach 0 HP (or lower!) you are dead (unless you are wearing an amulet of lifesaving). Hit points increase with level, and the amount gained per level is heavily influenced by toughness. Hit points are restored over time at a rate influenced by the healing skill (it is often advantageous to walk in place to allow HP to regenerate), and can also be healed instantaneously by drinking healing potions.
